So, even though I am in the midst of sweater knitting frenzy I somehow found the time to finish up the kitchen floor mat modification I had been planning.
 |
Well, in this picture, it's a quick steam/iron away from being finished. |
[Please pardon all the dark crappy photos that are a direct result of completing the entire project late, late at night between feedings.]
The original mat was poop-brown and a total magnet for dirt, dog hair, and pilling. This didn't really bother me but
it drove my husband nuts.

Enter awesome material purchased from the remnant bin -

Not the pink. Although that would have been a funny trick to play on my husband, I realize too late... |
I laid the fabric on top of the mat and trimmed it to match the shape, with about 2 inches extra around the perimeter.
 |
My son and Iron Man helped a bit. |
Then, with the use of my handy
bias tape maker -
 |
EVERYONE SHOULD OWN ONE OF THESE. |
I made a bunch of bias tape strips with the leftover fabric -
 |
Ironed and pinned. |
Next I pinned the fabric to the mat to keep it in place, and started to hand stitch the bias tape:

This time Schroeder helped. |

Once I finished that I trimmed the excess fabric from underneath (I had just stitched it in along with the bias tape) -
And - tada! It was done.
A few close ups for good measure:

It was a nice, quick project - and now I don't have to worry about a filthy looking kitchen mat! As an extra bonus we just learned it is water repellant. Right on.
